The issue at stake is also the fact that many of the Tamil movies lack strong story lines and generally being formula based, Tamil movie producers many times depend upon the Tamil film songs to carry the movie forward and hopefully recover their investments. This is very evident in recent times in the Tamil film songs world. For example, the sound and the musical genius of Viswanathan Ramamoorthy had to be replaced by the then newcomer Illayaraja, not because there was anything wrong with the former duo, but the audience started expecting something different. Great movie hits such as Annakili and Padhinaaru Vayadhinile captured the hearts and souls of movie goers primarily from the musical wonders of Illayaraja. But then the young movie goers of the new millenium wanted something different and thus grew the popularity of AR Rahman, Harris Jayaraj and the like. It is for the same reason that music directors such as Aadityan never really made it to the top. Audiences demand difference and ingenuity in musical creations, not necessarily the melodious rendering of yesteryears or the crazy head banging style of heavy metal music all the time. Here are some ideas for innovations.
The average Tamil movie presents four or five songs. Split the music composition, such that each song comprises strictly with one set of musical instruments. For example, the first song could have only wind instruments for accompaniments, the second song could have only percussion instruments, the third could be covered only by string instruments and so on. Songs could also be composed with no accompaniments whatsoever. Such unaccompanied songs usually become very popular since they could be played on college campus festivals, family gatherings and the like. With the tremendous appetite in the Tamil film song audience for Western music, a composition could start off as a standard Tamil song and then finish off as a western composition or vice versa. Introduction of rap notes in the body of Tamil songs has made some inroads but need to be used judiciously and more often. Tamil film songs sung vocally completely by popular western rock groups is another new concept. Songs could be sung by famous artists such as Sting. Many of the songs are sung even now by performers whose native tongue is NOT Tamil; why not go to UK or the USA and get some top notch singers rather than just stop with Mumbai and the Bollywood singers. Lyrical content of Tamil film songs could be altered also. For example, two lines of Tamil lyrics alternated with a line of English lyrics followed by one line of Hindi lyrics could form a lyrical arrangement not hitherto tried out. Here is another concept. Develop traditional Tamil vernacular lyrics of the Bharathiyaar style, but compose music to it the Harris Jayaraj style. Another option is to develop a song whose musical composition is primarily instrumental in nature, except it has only two lines of lyrics to it. These are just a few examples of novelty that can be introduced into Tamil film music in order to bring nuances to the movie going audience and hopefully generate increases in revenue.
